At the end of work the roll is closed, and what goes into it has been chosen. That closing is the studio’s last discipline of the day: a sitting does not end when the generating stops, but when every frame has been read against the card and sorted — keepers to be finished, near-misses allowed exactly one editor pass, the rest culled without appeal.
The closing review is short because the standard never moves. Identity against the five lines. Craft, briefly. Purpose, named or the frame goes. Frames finished in the warmth of the sitting, unjudged, are the ones regretted at leisure — and regret, at premium and upscaler prices, is the most expensive line in any studio’s ledger.
What the roll closes on is therefore small and true: a handful of frames that are unmistakably her, in order, ready for finishing. Tomorrow the roll opens on the same card, in the same pocket, and the series continues from exactly where the record says it stopped.
Open on the card, close on keepers. Between those two gestures, done in order every day, a whole series gets made.
